Making the Decision for Adoption

Only you can make the final decision on placing your child for adoption, but you do not have to make that decision alone. There are many ways within your adoption plan to personalize it to what makes you most comfortable. Your Haven Adoptions advocate takes time to get to know you and present the information you need when considering adoption.

In adoption, birth mothers are our priority. Our caseworkers take great care to ensure your well-being every step of the way. We focus on giving you time, support, and guidance to work through your questions, feelings, preferences, and concerns. Giving a baby up for adoption is one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make, and we are here to help you determine the best plan for yourself and your child.

Is Adoption Right for You?

While giving a child up for adoption may not be an easy decision, the adoption process for birth mothers is fairly straightforward if you have the right guidance. The most important first step is to decide if adoption is right for you. Talk to friends, family and close ones about your decision and find support from those you love. If you’re seriously considering adoption for your baby, take the first steps by reviewing our guide to the adoption process and what you can expect from the experience.

Emotional Aspects of Adoption

If you are just beginning to consider adoption for your baby, it is common to feel a wide range of emotions. You may also feel completely alone, not knowing who to talk to or how to decide the right thing to do. Haven Adoptions is a completely safe and friendly first call to make, and we are available 24/7 to talk or text about your circumstances.

Women who are exploring adoption will experience many different feelings throughout the process. The most common emotions are guilt, grief, fear, and uncertainty. Our caseworkers expect these feelings and support birth moms through every one of them without judgment or pressure to get past them. You have the right to take as long as you need to feel a sense of peace with your choice. We protect that right by being:

  • a shoulder to cry on and a hand to hold
  • a friend who listens to everything on your heart and mind
  • a cheerleader to help you feel strong
  • a sounding board to look at things from every angle
  • an educator so that every decision is an informed one

Our birth moms are the strongest people we know, and we are honored to share this journey with them.

Steps in the Adoption Process

If you are seriously considering adoption for your baby and ready to start an adoption plan, the process for birth mothers is fairly straightforward. Once you reach out to us by phone call or text, we will help you navigate the next steps.

Initial counseling and decision-making

You don’t have to be 100% certain about adoption when you contact us. Part of our guidance is to make sure you understand how it works to put your child up for adoption, your rights and responsibilities, and the different types of adoption available to you. When you’re ready to make your decision, we will be here to support you through what comes next.

Choosing an adoptive family

Haven Adoptions encourages birth mothers to choose the family for your child. Your preferences are an important consideration in finding the right fit. Every adoptive family presented to you has completed a home study and is fully eligible to adopt, so that the next steps can run smoothly for everyone.

Post-adoption communication and relationships

You will be matched with adoptive families who are open to whichever type of adoption relationship you wish to have. A closed adoption typically means that there will not be any further contact between you and the adoptive family. An open adoption can be very flexible, ranging from regular visits to simply exchanging letters and pictures.

Take your first steps in learning what it means to place your child for adoption, or get started with your plan.

Adoption Resources and Support for Birth Mothers

Haven is committed to setting the standard in caring for you from your first call until long after your adoption is complete. To us, this looks like:

  • Counseling services to make sure you have everything you need in order to make the best choice for yourself and your child
  • Support groups and communities to promote your mental and emotional well-being during and after your adoption
  • Hospital support to care for your physical and emotional health during delivery
  • Financial assistance to meet your practical needs

If you choose adoption, we will help you understand every step of the process.

Rights of the Birth Mother

Your rights as a birth mother need to be protected, especially while you are still considering adoption for your baby. You should never be intimidated or pressured into signing anything you don’t understand, or agreeing to something that makes you uncomfortable.

Your Haven caseworker is your advocate in legal matters. We will always confirm that you are making informed decisions and that you understand every legal document. Your caseworker is here to answer any question about your rights or to explain paperwork you are being asked to sign. The benefit of working with a licensed adoption agency like Haven is that we have the experience and knowledge to navigate all the legal issues in the adoption process. You also have the right to have your own attorney to represent you in addition to Haven guiding you throughout the process.

Once the adoption is finalized, you may still have questions concerning your rights regarding an open or closed adoption. We are still here to take your call, answer your questions, and help you find an appropriate solution. Our role as a fully licensed adoption agency is to represent the best interests of the child, the birth mother, and the adoptive parents and facilitate cooperation and positive communication between everyone involved.
