If you are just beginning to consider adoption for your baby, it is common to feel a wide range of emotions. You may also feel completely alone, not knowing who to talk to or how to decide the right thing to do. Haven Adoptions & Family Services is a completely safe and friendly first call to make, and we are available 24/7 to talk or text about your circumstances.

Women who are exploring adoption will experience many different feelings throughout the process. The most common emotions are guilt, grief, fear, and uncertainty. Our caseworkers expect these feelings and support birth moms through every one of them without judgment or pressure to get past them. You have the right to take as long as you need to feel a sense of peace with your choice. We protect that right by being:

Initial counseling and decision-making

You don’t have to be 100% certain about adoption when you contact us. Part of our guidance is to make sure you understand how it works to place your child for adoption, your rights and responsibilities, and the different types of adoption available to you. When you’re ready to make your decision, we will be here to support you through what comes next.

Choosing an adoptive family

Haven Adoptions & Family Services encourages birth mothers to choose the family for your child. Your preferences are an important consideration in finding the right fit. Every adoptive family presented to you has completed a home study and is fully eligible to adopt, so that the next steps can run smoothly for everyone.

Post-adoption communication and relationships

You will be matched with adoptive families who are open to whichever type of adoption relationship you wish to have. A closed adoption typically means that there will not be any further contact between you and the adoptive family. An open adoption can be very flexible, ranging from regular visits to simply exchanging letters and pictures.

Rights of the Birth Mother

Your rights as a birth mother need to be protected, especially while you are still considering adoption for your baby. You should never be intimidated or pressured into signing anything you don’t understand, or agreeing to something that makes you uncomfortable.

Your Haven caseworker is your advocate in legal matters. We will always confirm that you are making informed decisions and that you understand every legal document. Your caseworker is here to answer any question about your rights or to explain paperwork you are being asked to sign. The benefit of working with a licensed adoption agency like Haven is that we have the experience and knowledge to navigate all the legal issues in the adoption process. You also have the right to have your own attorney to represent you in addition to Haven guiding you throughout the process.

Once the adoption is finalized, you may still have questions concerning your rights regarding an open or closed adoption. We are still here to take your call, answer your questions, and help you find an appropriate solution. Our role as a fully licensed adoption agency is to represent the best interests of the child, the birth mother, and the adoptive parents and facilitate cooperation and positive communication between everyone involved.

Advice from an Experienced Resource Parent
